Dalby Big Air – Final results after 7 rounds. Scott Barrett flying brilliantly won the comp with a good margin on his Airborne Rev 13.5. He was 299 points in front of 2nd place getter Conrad Lotan on a Moyes Litespeed. Adam Stevens was once again showing good form and came 3rd overall on a Rev 13.5. Rohan Holtkamp climbed back up to 4th place after narrowly missing goal on a crucial day. Cameron Tunbridge made it to 13th place on the 14.5 Rev and Phil Schroeder was 19th place.

Congratulations to all and well done Scott Barrett. Thank’s to the Airborne team for making our gliders look awsome yet again!

Fun 190 to F2 Upgrade

The Fun 190 can now be upgraded to the F2 version with the factory retro kit which includes the sail and all the necessary hardware.

The price GST $2526 Export: $2296

The work can be carried out by the factory contact spares@airborne.com.au to book your glider in and for an estimate for the work. This depends on what other work may need to be carried out on the frame.

V-Light Polini F2T Now in Production

The V-lite F2, slow flight and a ton of fun! The Polini engine is proving quite impressive, it is well finished and packs plenty of power. The whole aircraft fits into the sub 70kg category. This means Australian hang glider pilot’s can fly it legally after gaining a simple powered endorsement. The F2T is a modified F2, a conversion kit will be available which allows the wing to be used by hang gliders pilots for foot launching from hills.

T-Lite Light Update

The T-Lite has been selling well with current owners happy and loving the simplicity of this type of flight. limited slots are available due to slow engine supply.

Some of the tests performed on the T-Lite/Core during certification to ASTM lightsport standard 2317 :

The Core wing was loaded with 1080kg for the ultimate positive test and 540kg for the ultimate negative test.

The T-lite base was loaded to 1043kg for the in-flight positive load test.

The images show the 6G ultimate load we are applying. Each sewn tube is 5 kg of steel ball bearings. We apply the weight inside the undersurface and then the top surface to get the correct load distribution. As you can imagine seeing the wing lifted off the floor with 1080 kg’s (2380 lbs) loaded into and onto it is an amazing test to witness.

Here are some specs:

T-Lite weight: 55kg (121 Ibs)
Fuel Weight max 7kg (15.4 Ibs)
= 62kg (136.6 Ibs)
Minus Maximun Suspension Weight (MSW) is 180 kg (396.8Ibs ) The weight the wing is certified to.
= So the total max pilot weight is 118 kg (260 Ibs)

Birds in Paradise Email

This email came in from Gerry Charlibois from BIP after he added up the hours logged on his 3 Airborne XT’s for 2011:

I just compiled the airtime for my insurance company for 2011, We logged 2180 hrs on my 3 SLSA airborne trikes. Doing the manufacturers required maintenance and part replacement, (base tube and mast etc)… I have found no wear or bending. In tearing down the SST wings, I have found a couple of Knuckles that had a slight elongation in the brass insert and we replaced them. The high wind conditions here in Kauai are very challenging for the instructors and the equipment. We are very proud of our flying machines and the team at Airborne should be very proud of their product that they produce. I am pretty sure we push the Airborne trikes a little more than the average aviator, but not to what they could really handle. We get to fly through the bad turbulence that mother nature can unexpectedly deliver! We do not need to thank god in these situations we trust our flying ability and thank Airborne engineers for building our aircraft to a recognised safe standard. If these trikes are standing up to everyday flying like we put them through in a commercial venue in tough conditions, I know the average recreational pilot can rest assured they are flying an aircraft that has been truly tested in real time. Birds in Paradise will celebrate 20 years of flying Airborne trikes on Feb 23 when I picked up Shane from Australia at the airport and we put together the first Airborne trike in Hawaii.

To the whole team at Airborne, I thank you and look forward to the next 20 years!

The F2 – The New Fun

The F2 is in production and selling like hotcakes. Even more Fun to fly than the Fun! Changes include: Added nose nappy, mylar pocket with mylar inserts an option, a new sail cut ‘rim & fill’ style with load bearing heavier cloths, a different luff curve. New crossbar junction and base bar hardware that allows interchange for carbon bar etc. The airfoil has been refined with improved reflex bridle attachement. Hinged battens and a new easy to install tip strut.

There are two colour choices for the standard configuration which includes a coloured to surface. A third colour option is available which allows you to colour the 1st undersurface panel with your 3rd colour choice.

Good news for existing Fun owners! You will be able to upgrade your old Fun 190 with the new F2 sail and some hardware changes.
